HOW INTERIOR PSYCHOLOGY INFLUENCES USER EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE CAFE CULTURE

ABSTRACT

This is a detailed report on how our surroundings can affect our mood and behaviour within the hospitality industry, through the disciplines of psychology and Interior Design. The report will aim to pinpoint the key factors of design that have an impact on customer experience and to highlight changes that need to be considered when creating an interior space. Although the research will be relevant to all aspects of the hospitality industry, there will be a focus on the impact that this has on café venues and their culture.

Usually when we discuss interior design we concentrate on the aesthetic aspects of the space, how you can achieve a specific look, what decorating styles to use and popular design trends to keep in mind. However, when designing a space for customer use the psychological affect it can have on any one person’s subconscious is a key factor to be considered and plays a big role in the choices made for the space. All research is found from credible sources as there are plenty of research articles and books that cover this subject. There is also first-hand research that has been collected by visiting places within the hospitality industry, specifically cafés, and getting customers opinions and reactions to the interior spaces, for example what drew them into visiting the business. This has helped form a better understanding of how the design and layout of a space influences customer experience.
